lichtenstein's waterlily series origins can be seen as far back as the '61 painting 'look mickey'. this is when lichtenstein first started to implement the idea and style of 'reflections' into this work. this theme appears often through the proceeding years, but it was the culmination of 'reflections' and his love for monet that saw the birth of the waterlily. the subject matter itself is always highly collectable and the waterliles subjective style gives the print more of a mass market appeal, thereby increasing the prints value and collectability.

roy lichtenstein, along with andy warhol were the original exponents of popart in the 50's. in a movement that was in stark contrast to the more self-indulgent 'abstract expressionism', popart stood as a critique on mass consumerism. the actual testament, to this movement, is it's true realization and relevence on todays 'fame' obsessed culture.
