thinking nude:
size: 42 3/16" x 62" inches: 107.2cm x 157.5cm • edition: 22/40 • year:1994
lichtenstein first begun his work on nudes in 1933; these were hand-cut stencils used as relief plates. these nudes were loosely based on his "love" and "girl" illustrations and not live models. this technique and theme then developed over the next 61 years. the dot technique used in the "nudes" were totally unique to his work as they gave the impression of undulating light, shadow and space. the nudes series are the most collectable and valuable prints, only second to the 60's cartoon style themes.

roy lichtenstein, along with andy warhol were the original exponents of popart in the 50's. in a movement that was in stark contrast to the more self-indulgent 'abstract expressionism', popart stood as a critique on mass consumerism. the actual testament, to this movement, is it's true realization and relevence on todays 'fame' obsessed culture.
